Hospitality House is a Charlotte based not for profit organization that has spent the last two decades providing temporary free housing for out of town families in medical crisis. While addressing the obvious design issues related to code, budget and site constraints, we had to design the interior spaces to be homelike, comfortable as well as durable while functioning as a free “hotel”. Constructed in Dilworth on a tight, urban lot flanked by two extremely busy streets we designed what is in essence a 14,000+ square foot three‐story “house” with family living, laundry, cooking, sleeping and eating spaces which serve 22 semi‐private bedrooms with their own baths.
